Mallo Map is built and supported by one person. Email support@geoffmallinson.com with questions, bug reports and feature requests — you can normally expect a reply within a few business days.
Including these details gets it fixed faster:
- your iPhone model and iOS version
- the Mallo Map version, shown at the bottom of the Settings screen
- what you did, what happened, and what you expected instead
- a screenshot or screen recording if you can capture one
Common questions
Why does track recording need “Always” location access?
To record a complete track while your phone is in your pocket or the screen is off, iOS requires background location permission. With “While Using the App” only, iOS stops giving Mallo Map location updates once you leave the app, and your track will have gaps or stop entirely. You can change this in Settings → Mallo Map → Location.
Does recording drain my battery?
Continuous GPS recording uses noticeably more battery than normal phone use, because the GPS receiver stays active for the whole recording. Stop the recording when you finish, and carry a power bank on longer trips.
My tracks and waypoints aren’t showing on the website
Check that you are signed in to the same account in both places, and that the iPhone has had a network connection since you recorded. Data recorded offline syncs the next time the app has a connection. If a specific item still doesn’t appear after that, email us with its name and roughly when you recorded it.
Can I use Mallo Map offline?
Yes. Recording tracks and creating waypoints work without a connection and sync later. Map tiles need to have been downloaded or previously viewed while online to appear offline — load the area you plan to visit before you lose signal.
How do I share a track or a trip?
You can share an individual track, waypoint or folder with another Mallo Map user by their email address. Trips can have multiple members, and can also be published to a public web link that anyone can open. Be aware of what that makes visible — see the Privacy Policy.
Can I export my data?
Yes. Tracks and waypoints can be exported as GPX or KML from the iOS share sheet, and a trip can be downloaded as GPX, KML or GeoJSON from the website. These formats open in most other mapping software.
Where does the map data come from?
Mallo Map draws on OpenStreetMap, OpenTopoMap, and the public mapping services of several Australian states and Geoscience Australia. Accuracy varies by source and area. If a trail or feature is wrong, the fix usually needs to happen upstream at the source — but tell us anyway and we will point you in the right direction.
